FLITCH BEAM

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in sociology. A flitch beam consists of two pieces of wood with a steel plate sandwiched between them. It is a structural element used in building construction when a beam stronger than an all-wood beam is required, but the strength of an all-steel beam isn't needed. Measure the distance you want to span or consult blueprints to determine the length of the flitch beam.

Determine how much weight the beam needs to support. Account for structural components such as joists that will rest on the beam. Determine how much clearance is required beneath the beam. Choose the thickest lumber possible for the beam while still maintaining clearance. You will need two pieces of the same length to sandwich the steel. Consult an engineering table in a structural engineering textbook to determine the required thickness of the steel plate, based on the length of the beam and the load it needs to carry.

Double check yourself with these span charts. Works with evenly distributed loads only. There are two different types of loads. Its either going to an exterior or an interior load. In other words, it is either going to be on an outside wall, or somewhere on the inside. The load on an outside wall with clear span trusses is exactly half the load on each wall. This will amount to twice as much load on the exterior walls compared to a building with a center wall.

This calculator takes all of this into consideration. You only have to select all of the loads that apply. Most interior beams need to include the roof load. If there is are any questions about anything else, then you should contact your supplier or an engineer. It has been my experience to never use a beam smaller than a two ply 2 x 8. No matter what the specs say. These small areas are usually door opening on the interior and people are trained that these areas are the strongest place in a house to be in the case of an emergency.

On longer spans the beam may require much more bearing space as indicated by this table. Beams of more than one ply must be fastened together with either nails or bolts. Posted on by. Understanding Loads on Beams There are two different types of loads.

Where to buy a flitch beam? Hi, I am intending removing a load bearing internal wall and looking for a supplier for the flitch beam that will be required. I had a structural engineer work out all the necessary calculation and I now just need to know where to buy a flitch beam from? So what was the engineers calculations? Jord86Sep 20, Trying to remember back more than a decade when I had a few of these fitted.

I think the builders chose flitch to be lighter and easier to handle than steels. I also think I recall them bolting them together on site - the steel plates arrived pre-drilled I think and they used this as a guide to the holes through the timbers. So the whole thing was easily handled by two folk. The timbers would likely have come from a local builders' merchants, and most likely the plates too.

On the same Ind Estate there's a metalworks so they could easily have drilled the plates for them - although there's a chance these holes were done on site too by our builders. Bottom line - if you go to a builders' merchants and ask, they will tell you what to do; you won't be the first to order a flitch.

The wooden support beam was designed to carry the existing structural load over the span or distance between the existing support columns. When a larger open area is desired with less column obstructions, removing one or more columns is an option, but in doing so, the distance or span between the remaining support columns will be much greater, therefore creating additional structural stress loads on the existing wooden support beam. Allied's Custom Fabricated Steel Flitch Plates will greatly increase the strength of the existing support beam.

The resulting sandwiching of all pieces creates a considerably stronger support beam or flitch beam to handle the structural load increase. Exact structural load requirements are calculated by architects and engineers. All Right Reserved.

Do a search on these forums -- it comes up rather repeatedly and there are some very good ideas and suggestions to be found. IMHO - I would just use the channels for moment, deflection and maybe shear calcs.

Wood could also carry shear loads - assuming good connections.Log In. Thank you for helping keep Eng-Tips Forums free from inappropriate posts. The Eng-Tips staff will check this out and take appropriate action.

In designing flitch beam bolting, for size and spacing, do you analyze shear flow for steel to lumber, or just divide the total shear stress for each bolt equally. Is the NDS value for the bolt to lumber controlling not much, just lbs when parallel to grain.

And for spacing, is there also a controlling value for unbraced steel to consider in a drop header? Quote PT99 In designing flitch beam bolting, for size and spacing, do you analyze shear flow for steel to lumber, or just divide the total shear stress for each bolt equally. To add to Kootk's 1, you also need to consider long and short term E for the timber to bound the issue. In the short term timber is stiffer, so higher load percentage carried by the timber, over time creep effects shed a proportion of the load to the steel, lessening the load in the timber.

This results in larger overall deflections. It's conservative to just check the plate alone for deflections though which makes things pretty simple if you aren't shapening your pencil on the calculations. For global lateral buckling, I've just estimated the behaviour as being equivalent to a solid timber member of the same overall dimensions. I suspect this is overly simplifying things though because of the much larger load carrying capacity of the flitch plate and hence amplifying any out of plane buckling forces compared with equivalent timber member.

But I guess its better than nothing which people sometimes do. In addition to the bolts to take the load from the timber into the steel, don't forget near the ends to provide additional bolts to take the load back into the wood if the wood is delivering the reaction in bearing.
